Bioinspired Lamps Workshop
In the Bioinspired Lamps Workshop, organized by David Torreblanca and the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB), the project's aim was to design lamps inspired by natural forms, specifically plants, through morphological experimentation with Rhino, digital fabrication technologies, and some analogous techniques.
The whole process was supported by RhinoFabStudio. The project methodological sequence was the following: abstraction of the natural forms, product conceptualization, digital experimentation and fabrication.
David is a Chilean product designer based in Medellín, Colombia, with a Master's Degree in Product Design Technologies. He is currently associate professor and researcher in the Industrial Design career at UPB in Medellín, Colombia.
If you aren't already, become a member at RhinoFabStudio's website to check out more pictures from their workshop!
For more information please contact David Torreblanca.
What is a RhinoFabStudio? A RhinoFabStudio™ (fabrication studio) is a small-scale digital workshop, certified by McNeel, with an array of Rhino and Rhino compatible software and computer controlled tools and training. Howl in New York
"Bodies at night are different than people during the day. Summer nights are when NYC sheds its business attire for something more feral. Join us for a 10-day intensive design/build workshop that addresses the spaces that bodies occupy at night in Brooklyn's hipster paradise."
Using digital tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper, study how light and the body transform space at night from a passive to an active environment. Working with +Farm, Lot Radio, and local fabricators, engage in a collaborative process to study, develop digital modes, test concepts, and build a full scale installation, to be installed on Lot Radio's site in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Dates: August 12-20

Darlene Farris-LaBar - G3D 3D Printing Lab
Darlene Farris-LaBar is an artist and designer who cofounded the G3D 3D Printing Lab that is located in the Art + Design Department at East Stroudsburg University.
Darlene is a Professor of Art + Design at East Stroudsburg University, received her
MFA from the School of Art and Design at SUNY, Purchase College, a BFA from the Indiana University of
Pennsylvania, and an MS in Digital Media Arts from the College of
Technology in New York City.
In an attempt to shift her
audience’s experience about the environment and transform the way they value
it, she uses various technologies such as 3D modeling software Rhino
and 3D printing to depict small plants and flowers indigenous to specific
regions. The sculptures were designed as they appear in their natural state.
She cofounded the G3D 3D Printing Lab in 2013 and now has an
operating lab fully equipped with FDM printers, PolyJet, Laser Cutter, CNC, 3D scanners and more!
For information
please contact Darlene Farris-LaBar.

New Zealand comes to Seattle
One of our long-time Rhino and Grasshopper users, David Trubridge, is coming to Seattle from New Zealand.
We noticed an article in The Seattle Times Pacific NW magazine last week featuring Heron Hall, some striking local architecture with David Trubridge's lights.
David will be in Seattle presenting a book he has in the works, 'Beauty Matters'.

Galeríafantasma by Laura Gomez - Medellín, Colombia
Laura Gómez is an Industrial designer born and raised in Medellín, Colombia. She has worked in New York where she acquired experience in art, design, and project managing. Her inspiration comes from her constant trips around North and South America, visiting art museums and fascinating places. This is how she became the founder of Galeríafantasma.
Based in Medellín, Colombia and open to the public, Galeríafantasma is a design studio where tech-surrealism inspired objects are created. Merging art and functionality, these products recreate a Sci Fi environment in the comfort of your home. CÓSMICA is the inaugural collection. It consists of furniture inspired by the Space Age where planets, antennas, and satellites are the primary objects.
Laura uses Rhino though her design and fabrication process. She stated that "Rhino became [her] main tool in the design process, with the software [she] can recreate the spaces and environments [she] wants to materialize and have a very approximate idea on how harmonic the whole installation is going to be when brought to life." She uses Rhino for the engineering and production process too.

Needle Watch by Arturo Tedeschi
Needle Watch (2017)
Design by Arturo Tedeschi
Software: Rhinoceros – Grasshopper
Arturo Tedeschi has been kind enough to share with us his concept design for a dress-watch done with Rhinoceros and Grasshopper.
"Who said that the output of an algorithm should necessarily be complex and intricate? The Needle Watch explores the possibilities given by the algorithmic-modeling in the field of product design, reaching a sophisticated minimalism which is usually the outcome of a traditional design approach. Inspired by 70’s -watches style, the algorithm manages a set of constraints mostly related to design-proportions and generates the main parts of the watch: case, grooved bezel, winding crown, bracelet. In particular, the seamless crown-guard details is totally created as an algorithmic output."
