Kangaroo 2.0 -- Now out of the pouch and available for testing!

Daniel Piker announced the first public work-in-progress (WIP) version of the new Kangaroo.

Engineers and designers use the Kangaroo plugin inside Grasshopper for interactive simulation, form generation, optimization, and analysis of structural components and constraint introspection.

This is a complete ground-up rewrite of both the core solver and all interface components, with several key improvements for a more powerful and flexible Kangaroo. (Joey grew up.)
  • Greatly improved stability and convergence speed, overcoming previous limitations on stiffness values.
  • The old Force objects have been replaced with Goals. These encompass forces, loads, and constraints in a single simple system.
  • Goal types for many new applications such as areas, length clamping, length and angle snapping, collinearity, coplanarity, symmetry constraints, rigid body assemblies, plasticity, and more ...
  • Creating goals is now simpler than ever. New goals can be added as needed. New custom goals can be written in the Grasshopper scripting components and changed while the solver is still running.
  • Several of the more awkward and annoying aspects of the old interface have been improved: No need to reset when goals are added, removed, or changed. No need to flatten the goals input. No need to keep starting and stopping the timer.
  • Direct dragging and anchoring of points in the Rhino viewports with the new Grab tool.
  • The solver library is now separate from the Grasshopper components. Power users and developers now have more direct control and customization.
For more information see Daniel Piker's videos.

*The fine print: This is a WIP. There are still bugs and missing features.

AAVSDXB 3.0 Workshop - July 10-25, Dubai (UAE)

Expocity 2020: Articulate Performance
July 10-25 2016

Dubai, UAE

AA Visiting School Dubai returns this summer to Dubai, UAE. The workshop will focus on instigating a design-build culture within the 3-week workshop. Participants will work with global experts in the field of hyperactive hybrid tensile structures. Feedback loops of computer simulation and analog prototyping will be the central theme of the workshop, a process aided with cutting edge digital tools for simulation and fabrication.

In this third iteration, AA Visiting School Dubai (AAVSDXB) will investigate novel means of engaging the public within the site of the Expo 2020. The group will elaborate on the methods used to perceive form, space, and effect within the ephemeral architecture of the event.

In response to the Expo's vision of Connectivity, Mobility and Sustainability, the workshop will propose an interactive, efficient and innovative enclosure for providing shade, invigorating the spaces between the pavilions of the Dubai Expo.

At AAVSDXB 3.0 participants will investigate the simulation of fabric-formed panels into spatial enclosures, as well as the articulation of that form with performative features through investigating novel technologies in computational design, open source electronics, and digital manufacturing.
Specifically, participants will examine the micro-computational complexity of tensile fabrics, hybridizing with advanced materials, electronic chips and 3D printed tools for tensioned articulation.

The workshop goal will prototype locally differentiated performance in tensile structures, allowing an interactive user experience to emerge.

Product Design Summer Camp 2016 - Thessaloniki (Greece)

July 4-15, 2016
Monday to Friday: 17:00-21:00 Lectures | 10:00-17:00 Group work sessions (optional)
International Hellenic University, Thessaloniki (Greece)

During the last decade product design globally headed toward understanding actual consumer needs and its creative incorporation in the design of innovative products. For this reason, it is necessary to adopt an integral approach to product development, more specifically, a multidimensional strategy that considers entrepreneurial, mechanical, and design related skills and competencies. The Product Design Summer Camp participants will have the chance to develop their knowledge and expertise in design, digital representation (Rhino), packaging, as well as the use of cutting-edge machinery such as 3D printers and laser cutters for the production of artifacts of high specifications.

Aim
The aim of this 2-week intensive Summer Camp is to acquaint participants with aspects of product design by providing up-to-date knowledge and an overview of the latest developments in the field. The latest research in product design along with state-of-the-art CAD/CAE/CAM techniques, coupled with a design-oriented approach, will be presented by senior academics and award-winning designers who are experts in their relevant fields, combining theory and practice in a hands-on approach.

Topics
  • Innovation Driven Entrepreneurship
  • Product Development
  • 3D Modeling* - 3D Printing – Rendering
  • Engineering - CAE tools – Reverse Engineering
  • Product Identity - Branding – Packaging
*The Summer Camp includes several different processes within the workflow of product design, including two days of modeling in Rhino.

Course credits
A Certificate of Attendance will be provided at the end of the program to all participants who have fulfilled the course requirements. Students/graduates taking the course for credit at their home institutions will also have to deliver an oral presentation on the last day of the Summer Camp and a written documentation of all stages of the Product Design Summer Camp (in pdf format) to obtain 4 ECTS credits. Since degree requirements vary among universities, students/graduates should ensure, preferably in advance, that their college or university will recognize such certification and award the suggested credits.

Application
Product Design Summer Camp 2016 welcomes applicants from a wide range of educational backgrounds. Participants may be students and graduates of related disciplines (Product Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Engineering, Automation, Management, Economics, etc.). Applications from other professionals with an interest in product design will also be considered. Lectures will be in English. Applicants should be fluent in the English language.

Extended deadline for applications: Friday 24 June 2016
