Warka Water Project: Winner of the World Design Impact Prize

We are proud to announce that Warka Water , a project by Architecture and Vision, has recently won the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design World Design Impact Prize.

Warka Water (WW) is an alternative water source designed to serve rural populations located in isolated regions where conventional pipelines and infrastructures do not reach and where water is not available from wells.

McNeel is honored to have sponsored and supported this amazing sustainable project, wishing it a successful future!

Reinvented Curves

Arnhem's new railway station in the Netherlands officially opened last November.

The masterplan includes a new transfer hall, a center for the waiting areas and facilities for trains, trams, and buses, as well as shops, restaurants, offices, and a conference center.

Employing shipbuilding techniques, along with the expertise of the engineering firm Arup, the design firm UNStudio used few visible supports for the sinuous roof. The result is a vast, open space filled with natural light where the floor, ceiling, and walkways seem to melt effortlessly into each other. See more photos and read more in the Dezeen article (with video).

The project spreads over history-making time. The original station is from 1845. The new design has been in development for 20 years. In 1998, Nuno Almeida, from UNStudio at that time, started this project with Rhino for the masterplan. He then continued it with RhinoScript and Grasshopper.

Now for a quiz .... Whose designs are these?

New Sculpture Works by Tim Celeski at NW Woodworkers Gallery

New Works by Tim Celeski at NW Woodworkers Gallery

From March 7th through April 30th, the Northwest Woodworkers Gallery in Seattle will be featuring new sculptural works by Tim Celeski. Hidden Geometry contrasts geometric and organic forms with the unique natural beauty of wood.

A Rhino and Grasshopper user, Tim is best known for his extensive line of custom furniture. His creative work continues to evolve and he is now creating and showing new sculptural wood pieces. Using reclaimed and cast-off wood, Tim looks for material that is unique in its form and imperfections – often spalted or filled with worm holes with grain and patterns that are determined by the life of the tree. The results are panels, vessels and free standing sculpture sized from 10 inches to over 10 feet. Like the trees the wood comes from each piece is unique, tactile with a sensuous surface that’s meant to be touched.

Join Tim at the Artist Reception on Sunday, March 20th, 4 PM to 6 PM.

AA Istanbul Visiting School - Tectonic Symbiosis, Istanbul Bilgi University (Turkey)

Tectonic Symbiosis
June 13-22, 2016, Monday–Wednesday

Eski Silahtarağa Elektrik Santralı

Kazım Karabekir Cad. No: 2/13
34060 Eyüp
Istanbul (Turkey)

AA Istanbul Visiting School, in collaboration with Istanbul Bilgi University, is a unique learning experience. Continuing its expertise on generative design methodologies and large-scale prototyping techniques, the program will investigate patterns of emergence, differentiation, and complexity in natural formation processes.

In contemporary architecture, a significant diversion from linear parametric tools toward generative design simulations is taking place. Design and analysis processes reflect this shift by focusing on simulations. In this program, attention will be on the process of design generation as opposed to the final form. The design agenda of the program will revolve around the design and fabrication of a one-to-one scale pavilion.

The program will be two phases:

Stage 1: Participants will gain an understanding of formation processes in nature, coupled with core concepts related to complexity. During this stage, basic and advanced tutorials on generative design algorithms and analysis tools will be provided. Participants will be introduced to advanced fabrication techniques. Building on its core methodology, AA Istanbul VS will perform as a team-based workshop promoting collaboration and research.

Stage 2: Participants will propose design interventions based on the skills and knowledge gained during the first stage. They will produce study models of various scales, finally following with the fabrication and assembly of a full-scale working prototype.

The design agendas of AA Athens and AA Istanbul Visiting Schools will directly create feedback on one another, allowing participation in either one or both programs.

Prominent features of the program and skills developed:

• Participants will be part of an active learning environment where the large tutor to student ratio (4:1) allows for personalized tutorials and debates.

• The toolset of AA Istanbul includes but is not limited to Rhinoceros, Processing, and Grasshopper, as well as analysis software.

• Participants will have access to digital fabrication tools such as 3-axis CNC router, laser cutter, and 3D printer.

• Design seminars and lecture series will support the key objectives of the program, disseminating fundamental design techniques and relevant critical thinking methodologies.

Eligibility
The workshop is open to current architecture and design students, PhD candidates, and young professionals.

Accreditation
Participants receive the AA Visiting School Certificate with the completion of the program.

Applications
The AA Visiting School fee is £600 per participant, which includes a £60 Visiting Membership fee. Discount options for groups or for those wishing to apply for both AA Istanbul and AA Athens Visiting Schools are available. Please contact the AA Visiting School Coordinator for more details. Or, you can find more information on application and discounts from this link: http://ai.aaschool.ac.uk/istanbul/apply/

The application deadline is 30 May 2016. The only requirement is the online application form and fees.  No portfolio or CV.

EdiTree - data management and manipulation in Grasshopper

EdiTree is a set of useful open source components developed by EDIT Collective to provide easier manipulation of data structure and data management.

It offers some additional features as follows, plus the existing data management components:

SubTree
Retrieve a specific branch/subbranches from a data tree. Extract items under the specified branch, when branch path indices are assigned.

Divide List
Divide a list into sublists by the predefined number (divisor). Any remaining item will be stored in the separate path followed by last branch.

Partition List (Advanced)
Partition a list into sublists by partition size. This is pretty much the same as the existing Partition List component except that it gives any remaining item in a separate list.

Split List (Multiple)
Split a list into separate parts at a specified index number. Similar to the existing Split List Component, each index indicates the first item in each list.

Flux plugin for Grasshopper

Flux Factory has released its plugin, Flux, for automated data transfer from Rhino to Revit or Excel via the web.

A Flux project acts as a central data hub for your design project. It provides a:
  • Web-based service to exchange data
  • Data table to store and forward data between design applications
  • Data view to inspect values in the data table
  • Workflow to transform data between applications using native plugins

Project partners are invited to share data. Each partner controls when to synchronize data, and can work in isolation until they are ready to share their changes.

Human UI - Interface paradigm for Grasshopper

Old
New

Create professional looking Grasshopper apps with custom user interfaces without writing any code.

Human UI is a new interface paradigm for Grasshopper.

Gone are the days of faking a user interface by laying out sliders and text panels and hiding wires on the Grasshopper canvas. Human UI interfaces are entirely separate from the Grasshopper canvas and leverage the power of Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), a graphical subsystem for rendering user interfaces in the Windows environment.

In other words: Human UI makes your Grasshopper definition feel like a Windows app. Create tabbed views, dynamic sliders, pulldown menus, checkboxes, and even 3D viewports and web browsers that look great and make sense to anyoneincluding designers and clients with no understanding of Grasshopper.
