Universidad Tecnológica de la Región Norte Guerrero

Universidad Tecnológica de la Región Norte Guerrero
Authorized RhinoFabStudio

The Universidad Tecnológica de la Región Norte de Guerrero (UTRNG), located in Iguala de la Independencia, Guerrero México, offers educational programs in Metal-Mechanical and Production Technologies, which make up their RhinoFabStudio since early 2013.

Within infrastructure, the University's RhinoFabStudio has CNC equipment, 2 Roland machines with 3 and 4-axis, Lathes and machining center Haas VF1, three-dimensional pantograph Cielle Alfa 30x30, 3D Printer, and engraving machine and laser metal cutting Sisma Big Smak.

Therefore, and in compliance with the institutional mission of being a University forefront is that, for the first time, the University’s RhinoFabStudio is profiding a minor in "Digital Fabrication.” Students and teachers are both taking this educational opportunity. The minor is being taught by three Authorized Rhino Trainers (ART): Arturo Flores from UTRNG RhinoFabStudio, Giancarlo di Marco de Roma RhinoFabstudio, and Andres Gonzales Global Head of RhinoFabStudio. This drives the formation and strengthening of the studio by having first hand experience of what others are doing around the world and especially trying to involve all levels of participants from the University.

AA Visiting School Dubai 2.0

EXPOCITY 2020: Accelerating Processes
5-15 April 2015

The second edition of The Dubai Visiting School will advance the research of the previous workshop by exploring avant-garde methods of materializing architecture. The outcomes will consist of a speculative body of work, representing a UAE pavilion for the upcoming Expo 2020, which will take place in Dubai.

This year, we focus on challenging the prevailing modus operandi of the construction site, where laborers take on complex and sometimes dangerous tasks of constructing iconic architecture for emerging cities.

AA Visiting School Dubai will re-examine the potential of building ad-hoc robotic fabrication arms, built on-site, to work hand in hand with the workers, enhancing their ability to construct complex tectonics. Subsequently, we will look at materializing spatial elements that are digitally simulated to quantify processes to simplify the construction of complex architecture.

The teams will aim at producing full-scale prototypes using our in-house technologies, alongside full representations of their Expo interventions. We will aim to test materials at full scale, switching back and forth between physical and digital design realms.

This edition of AAVS DXB will build on the body of work that will continue over the following years. Our ambition is the emergence of an experimental design laboratory, which pushes for embedding generative design logic, fabrication methods, and open-source operations into the architectural discourse in Dubai, a city that is evolving as a hub for art, culture, and design in the region.

Art on architecture

Panel wall during construction

Sheffield Hallam University, UK, is incorporating their art into a building facade with the help of Rhino. The three-story carving is installed on an exterior wall of the university's new 'Heart of the Campus' building. The basalt panels, a product of Rockpanel, total approximately 13 kilometers of machining on CNC routers for the engraved panels, with a tolerance of .5 mm.

The CNC routing was done at the The Cutting Room, using Alphacam, with Rhino for prep and trimming drawings and files.

Mr Comfy—high performance building simulation analysis

BuroHappold Engineering’s Max Doelling is featured in the latest edition of IBPSA's (International Building Performance Simulation Association) quarterly newsletter.

The article reports on the release of the latest version of Max’s data visualization tool, Mr Comfy. This high performance building simulation analysis produces many data sets, including hourly thermal and daylight information for an entire design year. This analysis helps gain a clear understanding of projected design behavior.

By spatially and interactively mapping results in the Rhino 5 modeling environment, the Mr Comfy tool links building geometry to multidomain performance and helps explore the relationship of multiple performance metrics through condensed spatial representations, such as thermal comfort and daylight use. Already in use across several projects at BuroHappold, it has demonstrated that, especially in a design centric early stage project development context, clear spatial and geometric data analysis helps not only to understand but also to clearly communicate results to clients. This forms a perfect fit with BuroHappold's intent to strive for intelligent simplicity and clarity in engineering.

RESHAPE 15 - wearable technology competition

Today, disciplines such as programming and electronics become highly transversal, blurring old boundaries and merging different fields of knowledge. Fashion has been already highly affected by this radical change. Clothes, shoes, and other accessories can now incorporate elements of hardware and software, generating a peculiar mix between fashion and computation that is incredibly fertile and inspiring. Data becomes beauty; interaction becomes emotion. As a result, a new esthetic is emerging. Reshape focuses on this, proposing with this competition, a new challenge for makers and designers.
