Apo Mechanes Algorithmic Design Workshop & Studio in Greece, July-August

Apo Mechanes is an intensive 2.5 week computational design studio to be held in Athens, Greece. A studio dedicated to furthering the techniques and concepts of algorithmic processes as means for design and fabrication, Apo Mechanes investigates the modes of algorithmic and machinic processes in architectural design.

Presently, computational techniques are predominantly employed in the optimization, rationalization or surface decoration of more traditionally created wholes. This research will instead focus on the inherent potential of computation to generate space and of algorithmic procedures to engage self-organization in the design process. Participants will create their own custom algorithms leading to the fabrication of working prototypes appropriate to their research trajectories.

• Apo Mechanes Algorithmic Design Workshop (including RhinoScripting) Jul 27-Jul 30 2009 (40hrs) €650,-
  
  A rigorous introduction to algorithmic design strategies and methodologies enacted through (and including an introduction to) RhinoScripting. By the end of this workshop students (working alone or in small teams) will have written their own custom algorithms and employed them in the creation of a design project.
• Apo Mechanes Algorithmic Design Intensive Studio (includes workshop above) Jul 27-Aug 11 2009 (160hrs) €1350,-
  
  A rigorous introduction to algorithmic design strategies and methodologies enacted through (and including an introduction to) RhinoScripting. The Intensive studio section includes and extends the 4-day workshop portion of Apo Mechanes by taking the projects through to digital fabrication employing a large scale laser cutter (1.4 x 2m). By the end of this workshop students (working alone or in small teams) will have written their own custom design algorithms and employed them in the creation of a CNC fabricated design project.
