On Wednesday, at the end of the afternoon session, Ioannis Zonitsas from Visual Dream will present a live demo of Rhinophoto, scanning the side panel of a Smart for 4 car.

Rhinophoto automatically creates 3D points from a set of photos taken with positioned coded targets.
Each target corresponds to a Number.
This Number is read by Rhinophoto from the photo and allows it to automatically create 2D points on the images at the center of the target.
Then Rhinophoto computes 3D point positions from 2D points on each image and creates Rhino 3D points.

The Grasshopper Primer - Second Edition
III International Workshop Digital Design Processes Porto, April 6-13
The III International Workshop Digital Design Processes (DDPIII) at the ESAP - Porto/Portugal - wishes to continue to discuss the implementation of digital tools in architecture and will try to develop the theoretical background into a practical experience about the integration of new digital technologies of drawing (CAD) and manufacturing (CAM) in architecture.
This edition follows the seminar Digital Architecture and the DDPI and DDPII editions, held in previous years. For seven days, a restricted group of students will be oriented in the development of a concise practical work, that will explore the constructive and creative possibilities opened through digital processes.
Addressed to
This workshop is for architectural students and professionals interested in expanding their knowledge. The availability to speak other languages (English, Spanish and French) encourages the participation of persons of others countries. Though not a mandatory requirement, the workshop will give preference to who have basic knowledge of digital modeling.
Structure
The DDPII Workshop consists of two independent courses (projects), dedicated to the exploitation of concepts and specific digital techniques. Complementary, parallel lectures are expected involving national and international researchers. At the end, the works will be presented in a public session at the ESAP, and in an exhibition that will be organized at during the workshop.

Inscriptions are now open until March 30. The registration in the workshop includes participation in the two courses. Participants are enrolled in order of their registration. The workshop has a minimum of 14 students and is a maximum of 20 students.

You may loose saved data when you open older data (such as patterns), but reading the file shouldn't cause an out of memory bug. If it does, load protect against PanelingTools (use PluginManager) before opening the file.
- Fix preview bugs in the 2d pattern manager.
- Fix a bug when loading PT scripting file for Monkey (.synaxml).

Rhino OS X - New Build
There is a new build available, Wenatchee 2009-03-21, with many new features, enhancements, and bug fixes.
Everyone is invited to download and use the OS X version of Rhino while it is in development.
Most of the core functionality has been ported from Windows and is very stable. There is still much to do to port the rest of the functionality and refine the interface. We don't expect the first commercial release to be ready for at least a year.
Don't worry if the build you are using is going to expire. New versions will be available every few weeks. There will be an newer one available before the expiration date.

Geometry in Architecture
Chris K. Palmer recently taught Geometry in Architecture at an undergraduate design build studio. Rhino, advanced Grasshopper and RhinoScript were the tools used for modeling, form finding and automated part drafting for CNC fabrication on 3-axis mills and laser cutters. The studio subjects were the language of pattern with an emphasis on Traditional Middle Eastern tilings and the combination of structure and ornament in architecture. He has been kind enough to share his work.

RhinoMembrane - New release
Gerry D'Anza has released a new version of RhinoMembrane, an FEM form finder Rhino plug-in with options for pneumatics, trusses, and cables that makes it able to find any real equilibrated surface with tension or tensegrity system.
RhinoMembrane v1.22 adds support for tensegrity structures and mixed formfinding with URS (Update Reference Strategy ) and FDM ( Force Density Method ) plus a few new options like plot of reaction forces.

Organic modeling - new beta
T-Splines 2.0 for Rhino Beta Released
Version 2.0 adds several new tools and workflows to generate organic surfaces and brings a full suite of polygonal modeling techniques into Rhino. Including:- Enhanced surface editing. The move, rotate, and scale manipulators feature exact numerical input, a clickable heads-up display, and other improvements.
- New grips. Directly edit using face grips, edge grips, points on the surface, and tangency handles.
- Hotkeys. Single key stokes can be assigned to both T-Splines and Rhino commands.
- Simpler surfaces. Support for triangle and other n-gon (pentagon, hexagon, etc.) faces.
- Box modeling tools. Including subdivide face, insert edge, delete face, weld points, extrude edge, fill hole, merging and many more.
- Smooth/mesh toggle. Toggle display between a coarse mesh and a smooth surface for easy and quick editing.
- Primitives. New T-spline box, plane, sphere, torus, cone, and cylinder primitives.
- Symmetry. Supports axial and radial symmetry.
- Thicken. Turn your T-spline surfaces into a solid with one click.
- Higher quality surfaces. The new, smoother star points yield surfaces that are more aesthetically pleasing, easier to offset (they are G1 smooth), and convert to fewer NURBS patches.

Driving Dimensions Labs launched
LEDAS Ltd, a provider of computational software components for computer-aided design (CAD) systems, has launched the Driving Dimensions Labs web site. Driving Dimensions Labs is the space for new technology where visitors can see some of LEDAS prototypes in action.
Driving Dimensions Labs contains several movies that demonstrate Driving Dimensions prototypes working in different CAD environments. They are not yet in beta stage, but users can see how the idea of dimension-driven design can be implemented in different CAD systems.
Many Rhino users can save time by using a bottom-up constraint-driven assembly design. Forward kinematic animation is only one of the features LEDAS does research when prototyping Driving Dimensions for Rhino.

New RhinoAir
A new version of the RhinoAir plug-in for rendering with Air from Rhino 4 is now available. What's new:
- Dynamic view changes for interactive preview rendering (IPR) TweakAir has a new option to automatically update the view used for high-quality preview rendering when the corresponding Rhino view changes.
- Instancer shaders AIR 8 introduces a new instancer shader type that creates new objects on-demand at render time. The RhinoAir help file includes detailed instructions on using the new tree instancer for growing trees at render time.
- Light channels: save a separate output image for each light
- Shader parameters for per-object environment maps
- Many additional options now update in the interactive view
- New help file section with tips for rendering large images
- New common product licensing policy: anyone with an Air license can now use BakeAir and TweakAir.

LAN-ON-SITE @ ROME / March 22-29 2009
The idea of Wall-Squared surfaces as a way of initiating explorations of complex surfaces. ITERATIVE design will be the emphasized design mode. Participants will be given a preliminary WALL and asked to design a second iteration through a controlled modification of a project parameters. Subsequent design iterations will seek to fully integrate insight gained from 1:1 scale fabrication explorations.
This workshop proposes the exploration of ‘digital tectonics’ whereby the emphasis is on total integration between digital modeling and fabrication at a 1:1 scale. Parametric design will be utilized in both methodology and modeling, where students will explore both associative and generative techniques that investigate variation in form and stress physical production design integration. The workshop will result in the production of full scale, digitally manufactured prototypes.
Three main topics will be examined 1/ digital design theory, 2/ parametric design + modeling [RHINO, RHINO SCRIPTING, PARACLOUD] and 3/ digital fabrication [RHINOCAM] Each of the four tutors hold different specializations within the stated aspects. The workshop will emphasize the importance of fusing the three topics, and the final outcome will consist of a fully integrated design- to-production prototypes through engagement with accessible CNC production means–3d printer, CNC routers & laser cutters.
