Leveraging the Power of Rhino for the Naval Architect

This new version (1.2.2) contains a number of new features, feature improvements, and bug fixes. Some highlights include:

Hydrostatics and Stability: By default, the "Pre-float" check is run each time hydrostatics are calculated, in order to review the model for errors. This option can be disabled.
Hydrostatics and Stability: Real-time hydrostatics and Sectional Area Curve will now update when an entire surface is moved (when the move is complete).
Weight and Cost: If the user attempts to edit the weight/cost properties associated with a block instance, a message is provided that only the weight/cost properties associated with the block definition can be edited.
Hull Design: Improved performance of Orca section calculation when dragging many objects.
Licensing: Implemented a newer version of the Licensing libraries, allowing self-service activation through a user website for cases where Internet activation is not possible, because the computer where Orca3D is installed does not have Internet access.
Units Fixes – Fixed bug in unit conversion values for metric mass density units other than kg/m^3.
OrcaMove Fixes - Fixed OrcaMove ghosting and an incorrect real-time sectional area curve behavior, in which one move caused two sectional area curve updates.
PIAS Export Fixes - Modified PIAS section export to meet the requirement of positive transverse coordinate (regardless of whether port/stbd is modeled). Added logic to join station segments by filling in gaps with straight line segments.
Hydrostatics: Fixed a bug in the scriptable version of the OrcaHydrostatics command when using the “TransformModel” command option. Fixed a bug in which “undo-ing” a surface manipulation while real-time hydrostatics/sectional area curve were active did not cause a hydrostatics/sectional area curve update.

This WIP will expire on March 1st. Either the final version of Orca3D 1.2 will be released before then, or a new WIP will be released.

How 3D printing revolutionizes architecture

Neri Oxman, a professor at the MIT Media Lab has produced a 6-inch cube sculpture “Making the Future” to illustrate the future of manufacturing. She recognizes too much limitations in conventional manufacturing and that limits the designers' mind too. There are some shapes that simply can't be built with existing molds and machining tools, but new 3D printing technology allows computers to build up structures using complex algorithms to make it possible to produce surprising shapes and structures. She believes that designers and architects can learn to take advantage of technology and expand their creativity.

New DeskProto V6.0 Released

Delft Spline Systems announces DeskProto V6.0 for five-axis machining.

Completely new features:

Completely new wizards: including more options, nevertheless easier to use. These wizards will automatically generate operations for Roughing and for a smoothing Contour. Also wizards for 2D milling and for Bitmap-to-Relief conversion are present.
Five axis machining: DeskProto now supports five-axis indexed machining, for machines with CNC controlled A and B rotation axes. This makes models possible that could not have been made on a three axis machine.

Multithreaded toolpath calculations: on multi-core PCs so far DeskProto could use only one core. Resulting in the CPU Usage not rising above 25% on a quad-core machine, which is annoying for long calculations. Now each operation will be assigned a core, which is much faster.
Ramping now is possible, for the first movement of each operation. Ramping means that the cutter enters the material along a sloping line instead of by making a vertical drilling movement.
The new Welcome screen offers a clear overview of all available options.

Olafur Eliasson’s practice is characterised by his incessant exploration of our modes of perceiving. Described as ‘experimental setups’ by the artist himself, his works span from photography to installation, sculpture, and video. Established in 1995, his Berlin studio today numbers about fifty craftsmen, architects, geometers, and art historians. In the studio, he deploys light, colour, and natural phenomena such as fog and waves to test how physical movement, engagement of the senses, and the interaction of body and brain influence our perception of our environment.

Some of his recent projects done in Rhino and Grasshopper include KIRK KAPITAL A/S Headquarters and Harbour Island in Vejle (Denmark) and Façade for Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre (in collaboration with Henning Larsen Architects).

LEAP alpine refuge designed in Rhino

As part of his master's degree at the Umea Institute of Design in Sweden, Artur Tchoukanov set out to produce an affordable desktop 3D printer for home. When he saw the trouble adults had grasping the concept of a 3D printer, he realized his target audience should be children. After extensive research and the help of Rhino, he developed the Origo.

With BakeAir, RhinoAir allows shading in a scene to be rendered or “baked” to texture maps. Baked maps can used as textures for realtime rendering in Rhino or with an exported VRML file. With Air 11 and RhinoAir 4, shading results can also be stored as vertex data of a mesh (with user-specified tessellation density). Shape To Fabrication Evolute-Corian workshop results

This year’s Shape to Fabrication Workshops brought something new to the table – interaction between teams and close cooperation among software developers, hardware developers and fabricators. Although the cooperation itself created major constraints for the design teams, the constraints proved to be an incentive for the participants to harvest the full power of the digital tools and come up with unexpected, intriguing and boundary-pushing designs.
The task of Workshop #3 was to design and build a seating area for a projection “room” with developable strips made of thermo-formed Corian. For this task Evolute teamed up with Corian processor - Cutting Edge, who’s vast fabrication experience proved to be a key factor for the success of the workshop. The Instructors – Mathias Hoebinger, Florin Isvoranu and Kevin Hoy had the pleasure of working with a team of talented individuals, architects, designers and restoration artists, namely Alexandros Vazakas, Camilo Diaz, Marcin Gladzik and Olivier Brouillard, who by the end of day #1 had a feasible design ready for production optimization.

Production optimization involved approximating the double curved freefrom surface with developable strips that fit within the very tight workshop constraints such as: time, limited Corian sheets available, Corian sheet size, mould size, machining and thermo-forming time, cut-off minimization, handling restrictions and assembly possibilities. The participants made use of EvoluteTools to globally fit developable strips to the freeform surface they previously designed with Rhinoceros. The global fitting of the strips coupled with the edge-length analysis mode ensured that the unrolled panels fit within the maximum width of the Corian sheets. After the global fitting, each lengthwise strip was treated individually and further optimized, then broken down into perfectly unrollable panels of manageable size. Throughout the production geometry output process Mathias used RhinoScript to automate tasks and assist the fabrication process with data that enabled the Cutting Edge team reduce machining time significantly.

After all the production geometry was handed over to Cutting Edge, the fabrication process was a full all hands on deck experience and everybody “got physical” with the Corian panels, as showcased in the time lapse videos. Although a fun and educational experience for the workshop participants, the fabrication success heavily relied on the experience of the Cutting Edge team, who’s amazing dedication and passion inspired all of us.

The use of developable strips as a smooth approximation of a freeform surface proved to be very successful both from a manufacturing and aesthetic point of view. After the assembly was completed, the original designed surface could be easily recognized through the continuous flow of the single curved Corian panels. It needs to be added that the seating area was quite comfortable ! Hopefully you had the chance to enjoy it at the Robofold exhibition.

Workshop robotic fabrication by Gregory Epps & Daniel Piker

Steven Sirr, M.D., a radiologist at FirstLight Medical Systems in Mora, Minnesota presented a scientific paper at RSNA 2011, the Radiological Society of North America’s Scientific Assembly and General Meeting, on how CT scanning offers a unique method of noninvasively imaging a historical object.

Working together with professional luthiers John Waddle and Steve Rossow of St. Paul, Minnesota, they used a CT scanner and Rhino to reproduce a 1704 Stradivari violin.

Available now - the release of a new Work-in-Progress (WIP) version of Orca3D. This new version (1.2.1) contains a number of new features, feature improvements, and bug fixes. Some highlights include:

OrcaStraightenPoints: Added a new command to place control points (or point objects) in a straight line in 3D, or in the 2D projection of a line.

Lines Drawing: Sections in the lines drawing are put on layers that mimic the Orca3D section layers in the model.

Lines Drawing Fixes: Addressed issue with diagonals being offset when the full hull was sectioned, addressed issue with scaling when the full hull was sectioned, all lines are now drawn on the same plane.

Stability Criteria Fixes: Calculation of Hybrid Ratio corrected, calculation of areas under curves corrected, corrected calculation of heavy lifting and icing heeling arms.

Resistance Prediction Fixes: Added total propulsive power output (PpTotal) to CSV export of planing hull and displacement hull analyses.

Lightweight Extrusion Objects: Fixed a bug in copying weight/cost data when copying lightweight extrusion objects in Rhino 5.0.

Shape To Fabrication 4 photos and videos

With 200 participants from all over Europe (and some from US & Canada), the Shape To Fabrication 4 conference was a big success (some photos here).

Preceded by 4 days of intense workshops (here some flicker photos, and here some nice videos featuring the Evolute workshop), London's premier architects, engineers, fabricators and contractors showcased a number of amazing projects done in Rhino, including speakers from Populous, Aedas, Luca Biselli, Simmonds Studio, AKT, Arup, Buro happold, Zaha Hadid Architects, Yolles, Amanda Levete Architects.

Software manufacturers: chaos group presented the upcoming V-Ray for Rhino 1.5 (expected to be released Q1 2012), a new version that matches the funcionality found at V-Ray 2.0 for 3D Max, including realtime rendering. Giulio Piacentino introduced RhinoPython to the community. RhinoTerrain announced two new future modules for Rhino 5.0: RhinoCity and RhinoRoad. Evolute did a great demo on its Rhino plug-ins for geometry optimization and the new version 1.2. The SMART Form and SMART Move VIZ tools by Buro Happold on real-time analysis and simulation tools for rapid design optimisations were also a hit. KUKA|prc (parametric robot control), a plugin for Grasshopper that for the first time enables robot control from within architectural software, was presented by Sigrid & Johannes (Robots in Architecture Association). Francesc Salla from Asuni showed VisualARQ new version. Symvol for Rhino, a new tool for volume based 3D design and modeling by Uformia, was simply a revolution. David Rutten explained the second solver available from within Galapagos which implements the Simulated Annealing algorithm (presentation here). And Daniel Piker made a great presentation about Kangaroo live physics engine with projects by students and commercial users.

HP explained how they see 3D printing in Architecture through a very nice video at Span Architects.

At the closing session the conference organizers announced a new Master programme to be held at the South Bank University London.

Engaging Generative BIM Workflows

Brazil 2.0 SR2 Beta 1 Now Available

Today we're releasing the first Beta of what we're going to call Brazil 2.0 for Rhino Service Release 2.

Despite the innocent sounding name, this service release actually has a number of new features which bring the Brazil 2.0 for Rhino product into line with the "non-Beta" functionality of the 2.1 product for Max.

The new features in this build are:

New Brazil light dome with importance sampling and photon support.
Support for an unlimited number of processor cores (SR1 supports 8)
Geometry interference filter.
Sun target specification support and in-viewport sun position preview.
Several crash bugs fixed and hundreds of other minor issues fixed.
Rhino 5.0 64-bit support.

This beta is production ready - so you should find it very stable and complete.

Thinking about CAD Standards for Rhino 5.0?

Phil Barrett from Hugh Dutton Associés (HDA) has been thinking about CAD standards since they started using Rhino 5.0 for more and more production drawing.

Beyond setting standards for Rhino 5.0, their other aim was to increase the compatibility between AutoCAD and Rhino. While CAD standards are normally only focused on AutoCAD, the new HDA CAD standards have been designed to work with Rhino 5.0 as much as possible.

Since HDA works with a broad range of clients and consultants around the world, they feel that it is in everyone's best interest to share CAD standards. To that end, they have made the the latest version of their CAD standards available to everyone.

They would be delighted to get your feedback.

Join Andres Gonzalez from our McNeel Miami office as he takes you through some introductory tutorials. This course is for design professionals who are looking to efficiently learn concepts and features of Grasshopper at an accelerated pace in an instructor-led online environment.

The online course will meet for a total of four sessions. We will have a short orientation to cover the GoToTraining module. The Grasshopper training sessions will be split into three half-day sessions. Details are following:

Today digital technologies inform all levels of building practice. As a link between representation, design, analysis and production, digital technologies are both practical tools by which to optimise existing practice as well as speculative media by which to explore its future. By facilitating exchange and feedback between the different knowledge fields of design, engineering and crafts, digital technology holds the potential to effect new answers to the complex challenges of contemporary building practice.

The second Digital Crafting symposium will discuss the future perspectives for a new integrated digital practice. Inviting practitioners from the fields of architecture, engineering and theory to share their experiences and present recent work, the symposium aims to unfold new visions for thinking the links between design, analysis and fabrication. This fast-paced hands-on workshop will investigate the morphology of the 'strip' by cross-linking developable surfaces and joining strategies.
